Schedule Regular Check-Ins with Your Child’s Teacher to Keep IEP Accommodations Effective

One of the most helpful things I’ve learned as a mom navigating my autistic child’s IEP is the power of regular communication with teachers. Scheduling consistent check-ins—whether monthly or quarterly—helps us stay on top of how accommodations are working and if any tweaks are needed.

Here’s how you can try it: Reach out to your child’s teacher to set up brief meetings or calls. Prepare a few questions about your child’s progress and any challenges. Share observations from home and ask how the accommodations are supporting your child in the classroom.

This ongoing dialogue helps catch issues early, ensures the IEP stays relevant as your child grows, and builds a trusting partnership with the school team. It also empowers you as a parent to advocate effectively because you’re informed and involved.

Every child is unique, so these check-ins can help tailor supports that truly fit your child’s needs. Have you tried regular meetings with your child’s teacher? What has helped you keep the IEP working well?
