New Early Screening Tool Developed for Autism in Chinese Toddlers Aged 12-24 Months

Introduction to the New Screening Tool

Researchers have created and tested a new early screening instrument designed specifically for Chinese toddlers aged 12 to 24 months to identify signs of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). This tool, named the Checklist for Chinese Toddlers with Autism (CCTA), aims to provide culturally relevant and reliable early detection of ASD symptoms in young children.

Development Process

The development of the CCTA involved a comprehensive approach. Researchers synthesized known early ASD symptom characteristics and reviewed existing international screening tools. They also conducted interviews with 15 medical professionals and consulted eight experts specializing in developmental behavioral pediatrics, child psychology, and psychometrics to ensure the checklist’s relevance and accuracy.

Structure of the Checklist

The finalized checklist contains 20 items grouped into three key areas: reciprocal social behaviors, social communication, and interest behaviors along with sensory perception. These items are assessed through behavioral observations of the child.

Validation and Testing

Initial validation was performed with 809 children aged 12 to 24 months to assess the checklist’s reliability and validity. Researchers established a cutoff score of 12 to differentiate levels of ASD severity. The tool was further tested in a community setting involving 4,786 children attending neighborhood child health care clinics.

Performance Results

The screening tool demonstrated strong performance with a sensitivity of 95%, meaning it correctly identified 95% of children with ASD, and a specificity of 82%, indicating it accurately recognized 82% of children without ASD. These results suggest the CCTA is effective at distinguishing children with a high likelihood of ASD from those with a low likelihood in community settings.

Implications for Families and Healthcare Providers

The availability of a culturally adapted and validated early screening checklist may help healthcare providers in China identify toddlers at risk for ASD earlier, facilitating timely intervention and support for families. Early detection is crucial for improving developmental outcomes in children with autism.

Limitations and Future Directions

While preliminary findings are promising, the researchers note that external validation is necessary to confirm the checklist’s generalizability beyond the initial study population. Further studies will help establish the tool’s broader applicability and effectiveness in diverse settings.
