Prepare Clear Notes to Share Your Child’s Needs Effectively in IEP Meetings

One of the most helpful things I’ve learned as a mom advocating for my autistic child is to prepare clear, simple notes before IEP meetings. This small step can make a big difference in how well your child’s needs are understood by teachers and the IEP team.

Why Prepare Notes?

IEP meetings can feel overwhelming, and sometimes it’s hard to remember everything you want to say. Writing down your child’s strengths, challenges, and what accommodations have worked (or not) helps keep the conversation focused and productive.

How to Do It

  • Start Early: A few days before the meeting, jot down your observations from home and school.
  • Keep It Simple: Use bullet points or short sentences focusing on specific needs or successes.
  • Include Examples: Share what helps your child learn or stay calm, like “needs frequent breaks” or “responds well to visual cues.”
  • Bring It With You: Use your notes as a guide during the meeting to ensure your voice is heard.

Why It Helps

Clear notes keep you organized and confident, making it easier to advocate without feeling flustered. They also help the team understand your child better, leading to more effective accommodations and supports.

Every child is unique, so consider what works best for your family and remember that your perspective is invaluable in shaping your child’s education.

What’s one thing you always make sure to share during IEP meetings? Share your tips below! Follow Love Beyond Words for more practical autism parenting advice and support.
