Research Explores Executive Function and Symptom Associations in Adults with Autism

A recent study investigated how daily executive function abilities relate to symptoms of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and core autism spectrum disorder (ASD) traits in adults. The research specifically accounted for other cognitive factors such as theory of mind (ToM) skills and age to better understand these relationships.

Key Findings on Executive Function and Symptom Severity

The study involved 120 adult participants diagnosed with ASD. Researchers used the Executive Function Indicators (EFI), which assess real-world executive functioning, to evaluate participants. They controlled for participants’ age and performance on the Happé Strange Stories test, a measure of ToM ability, to isolate the impact of executive function on symptoms.

Results showed that deficits in daily executive function were significantly linked to the severity of both ADHD symptoms and core ASD symptoms, including social difficulties, communication challenges, and repetitive behaviors or restricted interests. Notably, the association was stronger with ADHD symptoms than with ASD symptoms.

Furthermore, executive function impairments explained a considerable portion of the variation in ADHD symptom severity among adults with ASD. Alongside executive function, theory of mind ability and age also emerged as important factors influencing social functioning in this population.

Implications for Understanding ASD and ADHD Overlap

These findings suggest that executive function challenges in adults with ASD are closely connected to ADHD symptoms, which often co-occur with autism. This highlights the importance of assessing and addressing executive function in clinical settings to better support adults experiencing both ASD and ADHD traits.

Study Limitations and Considerations

The study did not find evidence that age or theory of mind ability moderated the relationship between executive function and symptom severity. However, as with all research, these findings should be interpreted cautiously. The cross-sectional design limits conclusions about causality, and further longitudinal studies are needed to clarify how these cognitive factors interact over time.

Overall, this research contributes to a nuanced understanding of how executive function deficits relate to symptom profiles in adults with ASD, emphasizing the complex interplay between cognitive abilities and behavioral symptoms.
