Study Explores Links Between Autistic Traits and Mental Health Symptoms Across Sexes in Young People

Research Overview

A recent study investigated how autistic traits (ATs) relate to various psychological symptoms in adolescents and young adults, focusing on potential differences between males and females. While sex differences in autism spectrum disorder have been examined in clinical settings, less is known about how these traits connect to broader mental health issues in the general population.

Study Details and Methods

The research analyzed data from 788 participants aged 15 to 35 years (mean age approximately 17.5), including 475 females, drawn from the TwinssCan cohort. Autistic traits were measured using the Autism Spectrum Quotient (AQ), a standardized questionnaire assessing the degree of autistic characteristics.

Psychopathology was evaluated via two instruments: the Symptom Checklist-90 Revised (SCL-90), which assesses a range of psychological symptoms, and the Community Assessment of Psychic Experiences (CAPE), which measures psychosis-related experiences.

Researchers applied sex-stratified linear regression models to examine the associations between AQ scores and the psychopathology measures. They also used Chow’s test to explore whether these associations differed significantly between males and females.

Key Findings

Across both sexes, higher autistic trait scores were linked to increased overall psychological distress and symptoms across all SCL-90 subscales, as well as elevated psychosis-related experiences measured by CAPE. This suggests that autistic traits are broadly associated with mental health symptoms in young people regardless of sex.

However, exploratory analyses revealed some domain-specific sex differences. For instance, the relationship between autistic traits and obsessive-compulsive symptoms was stronger in females, with AQ scores explaining about 15.9% of the variance compared to 5.6% in males. Similarly, for depressive symptoms measured by CAPE, AQ scores accounted for 13.5% of the variance in females versus 4.8% in males.

Despite these nominally significant differences in specific symptom domains, no significant sex differences were found for the overall psychological distress or psychosis-related measures.

Implications for Families and Future Research

These findings indicate that autistic traits may be linked to a broad range of mental health symptoms in adolescents and young adults, with some differences in how these associations manifest between males and females. This highlights the importance of considering sex-specific patterns when assessing mental health in individuals with elevated autistic traits.

The study underscores the need for further research, particularly longitudinal and clinical studies, to confirm these findings and explore their implications for diagnosis, support, and intervention strategies.

Limitations and Considerations

It is important to note that the study’s design does not establish causation but rather identifies associations. The sex differences observed in specific symptom domains were exploratory and should be interpreted cautiously until replicated. Additionally, the sample was drawn from a community cohort, which may differ from clinical populations.
