Study Reveals Common Neurodevelopmental Conditions Co-Occurring with Autism and Their Impact on Diagnosis Timing

Prevalence of Co-Occurring Neurodevelopmental Conditions in Autism

A recent analysis of Medicaid claims data from North Carolina has shed light on the frequency of other neurodevelopmental conditions (NDCs) occurring alongside autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in children, as well as how these co-occurring diagnoses relate to the timing of autism identification.

Key Findings from the Medicaid Cohort

The study examined 91,907 children born between 2014 and 2015 who were continuously enrolled in Medicaid from infancy until an autism diagnosis or through at least eight years of age. Among these, 2,694 children (approximately 77% boys) were diagnosed with ASD.

Language delays were the most common co-occurring condition, affecting 82% of autistic children, followed by global developmental delays at 52%. Motor delays also featured prominently in combination with other conditions.

More than half (55%) of autistic children had one of three prevalent combinations of co-occurring NDCs: 24% experienced motor, language, and global developmental delays together; 16% had language delay only; and another 16% had both language and global developmental delays.

Impact on Timing of Autism Diagnosis

The presence of these co-occurring developmental delays was associated with earlier autism diagnoses. Specifically, children with global developmental delays received autism diagnoses on average 10.8 months earlier than those without; those with language delays were diagnosed 8.4 months earlier; and those with motor delays, 7.2 months earlier.

This effect was most pronounced when neurodevelopmental delays were identified between 18 and 24 months of age, highlighting a critical window for developmental screening and early intervention.

Clinical Implications

These findings underscore the importance of vigilant developmental monitoring in young children, especially those exhibiting early signs of delays in language, motor skills, or overall development. Early recognition of co-occurring conditions may facilitate timelier autism diagnosis and intervention, which can improve outcomes.

Study Limitations and Considerations

While the study offers valuable insights, it is based on administrative claims data, which may have limitations related to diagnostic coding accuracy and completeness. Additionally, the findings represent associations and do not establish causality between co-occurring conditions and earlier autism diagnosis.

Families and healthcare providers should consider these findings as part of a broader approach to developmental surveillance and individualized care planning.
