Simple ball play is a wonderful way to help young children develop important skills like fine motor coordination, gross motor movement, hand-eye coordination, and social turn-taking. This activity uses a soft ball and includes six easy steps that parents and children can enjoy together.

Step 1: Roll

Start by rolling the ball gently on the floor towards your child. This helps them practice tracking moving objects and encourages reaching and grasping.

Step 2: Catch

Encourage your child to catch the ball with both hands. Catching builds hand-eye coordination and fine motor control.

Step 3: Throw

Show your child how to throw the ball forward. This action develops arm strength and coordination.

Step 4: Kick

Place the ball on the floor and invite your child to kick it with their foot. Kicking promotes gross motor skills and balance.

Step 5: Aim

Set up a simple target like a bucket or box and help your child aim the ball towards it. This encourages focus and spatial awareness.

Step 6: Take Turns

Make the activity social by taking turns passing the ball back and forth. Turn-taking supports social skills and patience.

How to Play Together: Model each step clearly and use encouraging words. Keep instructions simple and give your child plenty of time to respond. Celebrate all attempts and make the game fun and pressure-free.

Easy Adaptation: For younger children, reduce the distance for rolling and throwing or use a larger, softer ball. For older children, increase the distance or add counting the number of successful catches or kicks.

Ball play is a joyful way to build many skills through movement and interaction. What is your child’s favorite way to play with a ball?
