Intellectual Functioning Key to Adaptive Behavior in Autistic Children, Study Finds

Study Explores Sensory Processing, Executive Function, and Adaptation in Autism

New research has investigated how sensory processing differences, executive functioning, and intellectual ability relate to adaptive behavior in autistic children. The study involved 200 children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), divided into preschool and school-age groups, aiming to clarify which factors most influence daily living skills.

Key Findings Highlight Intellectual Functioning’s Role

Caregivers provided information through standardized assessments measuring sensory processing, executive functions (EF), and adaptive behavior. Analyses revealed that both developmental stage and IQ affected sensory processing profiles, with IQ exerting the strongest influence.

While sensory challenges were linked to executive dysfunction and reduced adaptive skills, the study found that executive functioning did not explain the connection between sensory processing and adaptive behavior when accounting for IQ. Instead, intellectual functioning emerged as the primary predictor of adaptive capabilities in both preschool and school-age children.

Specifically, IQ showed a significant positive association with adaptive skills (preschool: β = 0.38; school-age: β = 0.42), and sensory processing difficulties had a direct negative effect (preschool: β = -0.33; school-age: β = -0.30). Together, these factors explained about 36% of the variance in adaptive behavior.

Context and Implications for Families

Adaptive behavior encompasses everyday skills needed for independence, such as communication, socialization, and practical tasks. Understanding what influences these abilities in autistic children can guide interventions and support strategies.

This study suggests that while sensory and executive challenges often co-occur in autism, it is the child’s overall cognitive level and sensory processing that more directly impact their ability to function adaptively. This insight may encourage families and professionals to consider intellectual functioning and sensory needs as key areas for support.

Limitations and Considerations

As with all research, these findings should be interpreted cautiously. The study does not establish causation but identifies associations. Additionally, executive functions are complex and may interact with other factors not fully captured here. Individual differences mean that support plans should remain personalized.

For parents and caregivers, this research underscores the importance of comprehensive assessments that include cognitive and sensory evaluations to tailor effective interventions.
