A recent study has examined how working memory relates to grammatical abilities in children diagnosed with High-Functioning Autism (HFA), a subgroup of Autism Spectrum Disorder characterized by average or above-average intelligence and relatively typical language development but persistent social communication challenges.

Conducted with 20 Persian-speaking children with HFA, the research focused on verbal working memory and morpho-syntactic skills. Researchers collected speech samples from participants and analyzed them using the Persian Developmental Sentence Scoring (PDSS) system to assess grammar. To evaluate phonological working memory (PWM), children completed tasks such as recalling sequences of numbers forwards and backwards and repeating non-words of varying syllable lengths.

The study found a notable association between working memory and grammar abilities. Specifically, the strongest correlation was observed between PDSS scores and the repetition of three-syllable non-words (correlation coefficient r = 0.594, p < 0.05), indicating that better phonological working memory was linked to improved grammatical performance. Conversely, the weakest correlation appeared with immediate repetition of one-syllable non-words. Most subtests of the PDSS showed statistically significant relationships with PWM tasks, with correlations ranging from weak to strong.
Implications for Language Intervention
These findings suggest that difficulties in grammatical skills among children with HFA may be connected to limitations in phonological working memory. The research highlights the potential benefit of incorporating working memory considerations into language intervention programs, particularly those aimed at enhancing grammar development in this population.

While the study provides valuable insights, it involved a relatively small sample size and focused on Persian-speaking children, which may limit generalizability. Also, the research identifies associations rather than causal relationships, so further studies are needed to clarify how working memory influences language abilities in HFA.
