New Study Supports Reliable Autism Intervention Measures Across Clinic and Home Settings

Introduction

Researchers have explored how to effectively measure changes in social communication and caregiver strategies in young autistic children receiving Naturalistic Developmental Behavioral Interventions (NDBIs). A recent study investigated two brief observational tools—the Brief Observation of Social Communication Change (BOSCC) and the Measure of NDBI Strategy Implementation-Caregiver Change (MONSI-CC)—to assess their reliability and feasibility in both clinic and home environments.

Study Overview and Methods

The study involved 60 caregiver-child pairs who participated in standardized 12-minute play sessions led by caregivers in both clinic and home settings. During home visits, research staff provided remote real-time support and prompts similar to those used in clinics to maintain consistency. Researchers evaluated how acceptable and feasible the home-based assessments were for caregivers, and they tested the reliability of the BOSCC and MONSI-CC through internal consistency, inter-rater reliability, and test-retest reliability analyses.

Key Findings

Results indicated high caregiver acceptance and strong adherence to procedures during home assessments. Both BOSCC and MONSI-CC demonstrated comparable reliability across clinic and home contexts. Most scores on these measures did not significantly differ between the two settings, and several showed meaningful correlations across contexts. Notably, associations between children’s social communication behaviors and caregiver strategy use were most robust within the same environment but were also present when comparing across settings.

Implications for Families and Intervention Services

This study suggests that brief, standardized observational tools like BOSCC and MONSI-CC can be effectively used to monitor progress in early autism interventions both in clinical environments and at home. Such flexibility could facilitate more accessible and scalable assessments, allowing caregivers and clinicians to track intervention outcomes in naturalistic settings without compromising reliability.

Limitations and Considerations

While the findings are promising, the study’s sample size was moderate and focused on a specific age group and intervention type. Further research is needed to confirm these results across diverse populations and settings. Additionally, the remote support provided during home assessments may not be available in all contexts, which could influence feasibility and fidelity.

Conclusion

Standardized observational assessments like BOSCC and MONSI-CC show potential as reliable tools for evaluating both child social communication and caregiver strategy use across different settings. This supports their use in enhancing early intervention monitoring and tailoring support to families’ needs.
