New Parent Guide Developed to Support Sleep in Children with Autism Through Holistic Self-Regulation Strategies

Introduction

Children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) commonly experience sleep difficulties, which can affect their overall well-being and daily functioning. Recognizing the complex relationship between sleep and self-regulation in ASD, researchers have developed a parent guide designed to improve sleep quality in children aged 6 to 12 years diagnosed with level 1 or 2 ASD.

Development of the Parent Guide

Guided by family-centered and general systems theories, the research team conducted a thorough literature review to identify effective interventions focusing on self-regulation strategies that may enhance sleep in children with ASD. The resulting guide was structured into a booklet format featuring 23 sections organized under four main chapters: “Introductory Information,” “Child-Related Factors,” “Environment-Related Factors,” and “Impact of Other Activities on Sleep.” This structure reflects a holistic approach addressing the interplay between the child’s characteristics, environmental influences, and sleep behaviors.

Validation and Pilot Testing

To ensure the guide’s relevance and clarity, experts and parents reviewed the content and face validity. Subsequently, a small pilot study involving three parents of children with ASD was conducted. Parents used the booklet and provided feedback on its usability and helpfulness. Sleep outcomes were measured using the Children’s Sleep Habits Questionnaire (CSHQ).

Findings from the Pilot Study

The pilot revealed slight improvements in sleep habits, with minor reductions of 2 to 3 points in CSHQ scores. However, these changes were below the threshold typically considered clinically meaningful. The study was primarily designed to assess feasibility rather than to establish efficacy.

Implications for Families and Future Research

This parent guide emphasizes a multidimensional approach to self-regulation strategies, considering the child, environment, and sleep factors together. Such an approach may offer advantages over interventions focusing on a single domain, which might overlook the complex challenges faced by children with ASD. While initial findings suggest the guide is practical and well-received, larger and more rigorous studies are needed to confirm its effectiveness.

Limitations and Cautions

Given the small sample size and preliminary nature of the pilot, conclusions about the guide’s impact on sleep should be made cautiously. Further research involving more participants and controlled study designs will be essential to determine the true benefits and potential for widespread use.
