Study Explores Narrative Understanding and Moral Reasoning in Greek-Speaking Children with Autism Using Aesop’s Fables

Research Overview

A recent study investigated how Greek-speaking children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) comprehend narratives and engage in moral reasoning, using Aesop’s fables as a testing medium. The research focused on assessing both cognitive and affective Theory of Mind (ToM) abilities—the capacity to understand others’ thoughts and feelings—and the ability to judge the morality of characters’ actions within stories.

Study Design and Participants

The study involved 25 children diagnosed with autism, alongside two control groups of typically developing children matched for age and language skills. Participants listened to two different Aesop’s fables that varied in linguistic complexity, including vocabulary, syntax, and the use of decontextualized language (expressions referring to past events). Afterward, they answered questions designed to evaluate their understanding of the characters’ mental states and their moral evaluations of the fables’ messages.

Key Findings

Results revealed that autistic children performed significantly lower than age-matched peers in tasks requiring attribution of both affective and cognitive mental states. However, when compared to language-matched typically developing children, autistic participants showed no significant differences in Theory of Mind comprehension. Additionally, autistic children demonstrated notable difficulties in articulating the moral lessons of the fables, particularly when the stories were linguistically complex.

Implications for Understanding Autism and Moral Reasoning

The findings suggest that challenges in narrative comprehension among autistic children are influenced by language demands and that moral reasoning skills may be intertwined with these linguistic factors. The use of Aesop’s fables provided a valuable framework for examining these abilities, highlighting the potential for such narratives to serve as tools in assessing moral judgment in autism.

Considerations and Limitations

While the study offers insights into the interplay between language, Theory of Mind, and moral reasoning in autism, it is important to note that the sample size was relatively small and limited to Greek-speaking children. The results may not generalize across different languages or cultural contexts. Furthermore, the study design does not establish causation but rather associations between language complexity and narrative comprehension challenges.
