New Scale Measures Choice-Making Opportunities Among Autistic Adults
Introduction to Choice-Making in Autism
While self-determination is often viewed as an internal psychological trait, external factors such as the availability of opportunities to make choices also play a crucial role. However, these opportunities have been less explored, particularly among autistic adults. Addressing this gap, researchers have developed a new tool called the AASPIRE-Choices and Decisions Scale (AASPIRE-CDS) to assess the extent to which autistic adults have opportunities to make choices and decisions in their daily lives.
Development and Validation of the AASPIRE-CDS
The AASPIRE-CDS was created through a community-based participatory approach, involving autistic adults and caregivers in an iterative process to ensure relevance and clarity. The scale was tested using data from the AASPIRE Outcomes Project, which included responses from 839 autistic adults. These participants provided information through direct self-report, caregiver-supported self-report, and caregiver report.
Statistical analyses, including exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses, supported that the scale measures a single underlying dimension related to choice-making opportunities. Further tests showed that the scale functioned consistently across different respondent types (excluding some limitations with caregiver reports) and living situations.
Reliability and Validity Findings
The AASPIRE-CDS demonstrated strong internal consistency and test-retest reliability, indicating stable and coherent measurement. Preliminary evidence also suggested the scale is sensitive to changes over time.
In terms of validity, higher scores on the AASPIRE-CDS were linked to greater self-determination, better communication skills, more independent living, and fewer support needs. However, associations with quality of life, overall health, and job satisfaction were present but weaker compared to traditional self-determination measures. This suggests that while choice-making opportunities relate to self-determination, they represent a distinct aspect worthy of separate evaluation.
Implications for Supporting Autistic Adults
These findings emphasize the importance of not only fostering internal self-determination but also ensuring that autistic adults have real opportunities to make meaningful choices. The AASPIRE-CDS offers a validated tool to assess these opportunities across a range of support needs, helping caregivers, service providers, and researchers better understand and promote autonomy in this population.
Limitations and Future Directions
The study noted some caution in interpreting caregiver-reported data, suggesting that further research with larger caregiver samples is needed to confirm the validity of proxy reports. Continued investigation will help refine the scale and expand understanding of how choice-making opportunities impact the well-being of autistic adults.
