Study Finds Visual-Spatial Skills May Be Affected in Children with ADHD and Autistic Traits

Research Explores Cognitive Profiles in Children with ADHD and Autistic Traits

A recent study investigated how autistic traits might influence cognitive abilities in children diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Using the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-Revised (WISC-R), researchers compared cognitive test results between children with ADHD who exhibited autistic traits and those who did not.

Study Design and Participants

The study retrospectively analyzed data from children aged 8 to 16 years diagnosed with ADHD according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5) criteria. Participants were divided into two groups based on their scores on the Social Responsiveness Scale, which measures autistic traits. Children with a formal diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder, intellectual disability, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, anxiety, depression, or a Full-Scale IQ below 70 were excluded to ensure a focused comparison.

Key Findings: Visual-Spatial Skill Differences

Among the 36 children studied—16 with autistic traits and 20 without—the only significant difference in WISC-R subtest scores was observed in the Block Design task. This subtest assesses visual-spatial and motor integration skills. Children with autistic traits scored lower on this task (P = .003), while no significant differences emerged in overall Full-Scale IQ, verbal IQ, or performance IQ scores.

Implications for Understanding ADHD and Autistic Traits

The findings suggest that autistic traits in children with ADHD may specifically impact visual-spatial processing and motor integration, rather than general intellectual functioning. This nuance highlights the importance of considering comorbid traits when assessing cognitive profiles in ADHD.

Future Directions and Considerations

The authors recommend further research incorporating objective motor skill assessments to better understand the relationship between autistic traits and cognitive functioning in ADHD. Such studies could inform tailored interventions that address specific cognitive challenges faced by this population.

This study was published in the Eurasian Journal of Medicine and can be accessed for more details here.
