Spiritual Health Tied to Positive Health Habits Among Parents of Children with ASD

Parents caring for children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) often face significant challenges that can impact their own well-being. A recent study conducted in Iran has explored how spiritual health relates to health-promoting behaviors in these parents, suggesting that stronger spiritual well-being may encourage healthier lifestyle choices.

Study Overview and Participants

The cross-sectional research, published in the Journal of Education and Health Promotion, surveyed 178 Iranian parents of children diagnosed with ASD in 2024. Most participants were women (nearly 90%), with almost half aged between 30 and 40 years. Data collection involved questionnaires assessing demographic information, spiritual health, and health-promoting lifestyles.

Key Findings on Spiritual Health and Lifestyle

Results showed that the average score for health-promoting behaviors was 131.60 (±24.42), while the mean spiritual health score was 86.14 (±19.06). Spiritual health levels varied, with 1.7% of mothers reporting low spiritual health, 71.3% moderate, and 27% high. Notably, a significant positive correlation was found between spiritual health and engagement in health-promoting behaviors.

Parents who reported higher spiritual health were more likely to participate in activities beneficial to their overall health, including physical activity, nutrition, and stress management. The primary sources of health information for these parents were healthcare professionals and the Internet.

Implications for Supporting Parents of Children with ASD

The study highlights the potential benefits of integrating spiritual health support into interventions aimed at parents of children with ASD. Given that a majority of parents reported only moderate spiritual health, targeted programs such as spiritual counseling, spirituality-based workshops, and peer support groups could enhance both spiritual and physical well-being.

Considerations and Limitations

While the findings suggest an association between spiritual health and healthy behaviors, the cross-sectional design does not establish causation. Additionally, the study’s focus on Iranian parents may limit generalizability to other cultural contexts. Further research is needed to explore how spiritual health interventions might effectively support this population.
